Copland: Appalachian Spring (Original Chamber Version) (Columbia Chamber Ensemble / Copland)

 

Music on the occasion of my birthday. On this same day (October 30th) in 1944, Copland's Appalachian Spring premiered at the Library of Congress in D.C.. It would go on to win the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Music. 

自己生日這天，西方音樂史的今天所發生的事：知名美國作曲家Aaron Copland著名的Applachian Spring原始版本的首演，於1944年10月30號在華盛頓首府的Library of Congress (國會圖書館)音樂廳表演。原本的Appalachian Spring其實是芭蕾舞樂，由Martha Graham擔任主角以及其餘舞團成員演出，故事講的是一對西部拓荒時期的年輕夫妻的新婚日。而原編制，則僅是13件樂器的室內樂形式：雙弦樂四重奏、低音大提琴、長笛、單簧管、低音管、還有鋼琴。

今天最常聽到，也是最受歡迎的版本，是Copland一年後將其芭蕾舞樂改編成的管弦樂組曲。組曲將原本的14首濃縮成8個樂章，將有相同主題的地方結合在一起。不能否認管弦樂組曲更有氣勢，色彩也更豐富。但是，Copland本人對原始版更情有獨鍾，認為小編制所帶來的清晰度，更接近他原本的構思。1944年，二戰快要落幕，美國站在勝利的一方，Appalachian Spring整首更充滿了當時美國人對未來願景的正面與陽光心態。組曲倒數第二樂章聽到的那個旋律，則是基督教會Shaker(震教徒)的一首祈禱歌曲Simple Gifts。 拜Copland所賜，它今天成為了世界名曲。

Copland喜愛Appalachian Spring的原始版，從他親自指揮Columbia公司室內樂團的錄音可見證到。1973年錄製，隔年1974年發行的專輯，2000年經digital master後重發行的CD，聽得並無過時感。更重要的是，這個當初在Copland 100年誕辰推出的A Copland Celebration系列裡，還附上了之前從未發行過的Copland排練時的珍貴錄音，更是直接聽到來自作曲家第一手的詮釋訊息~~~
