3/28/06 Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area

(Redding Sundial Bridge)

This was the last day of our trip before we returned to school and faced reality, so to speak. We stayed the night in Redding, CA, where they have this landmark called the Sundial Bridge. Basically it's this bridge that has an enormous sundial at the end. Apparently it is only accurate on one day - summer solstice. Completed in 2004, it was supposed to increase tourism coming into the Redding area. I suppose it has been somewhat successful in doing so. At least, many of my friends that I know traveling North make a stop in Redding at some point in their trip.

(Shasta Dam)

(Lake Shasta)

The National Park Service unit of the day is Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area. To be more specific, the United States Forest Service (USFS) manages the Shasta-Trinity unit while the NPS manages the Whiskeytown unit. The area contains the respective lakes that are dammed up. To be pretty upfront, the area was fairly uninteresting, and the bad weather did not really play a big factor in this. The only salvaging grace was probably visiting Shasta Dam. You can visit the dam facility, where there are minor visitor exhibits. As for the Whiskeytown unit itself, I'm not sure there was anything particular memorable. I understand that during the summer, water sports and boating activities become popular on the lakes, but I am pretty far removed from those activities.
